Hints and Tips
Always ensure all your food is within its use by date, Inc. survival rations, Puri tabs.
New boots?? Make sure you wear them around the house as much as possible before your first hike in them.
If we are going to Dartmoor on a Friday evening, don't put your torch in the trailer, keep it on you in the minibus. When we arrive it will be dark, you will need your torch to find your way to the trailer and find your bag, tent etc.
Waterproof not so waterproof? A quick tumble-dry can help (check manufacturers instructions).
Forgetful? Pack your bag well in advance, make sure you tick off each item.
Only pack what you need!! work as a team when packing your rucksacks, share cookers, food and tents. Make sure the weight is spread equally.
Thirst is a poor indicator of your body's need for fluid. In fact, by the time you feel thirsty, you are well on your way to dehydration. Dehydration will affect your performance. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after the walk.
If you really have to drop out make sure you do it in the middle of the moor where you have more chance to get a helicopter ride home!
If you are walking into the wind, walk behind sooty!
Keep spare clothes dry, especially socks. There's nothing worse than wet socks on Sunday.
Large items attached to your pack (I.E. roll mats) can cause massive wind resistance in high winds. If possible attach to the side or the bottom, not the top.
Think about your second days pack lunch - meat products in hot weather may not fair so well!
