Weekend Kit List

Everything listed below must be carried all weekend

(except those items listed in the section titled 'To leave in the van')

General Kit

Rucksack Ideally about 65 litres - you have to fit additional team kit like tent, first aid kit etc.
Liner for rucksack Must be thick plastic, not a carrier bag. Must be waterproof.
Waterproof jacket Must be capable of withstanding prolonged wet weather and offer insulation. Must have non-detachable hood. Single skin lightweight jackets are not acceptable even if technically excellent. However these will be allowed providing that an additional set of 2x warm sweater/microfleece are also carried.
Waterproof trousers Must have taped seams and be robust. Many have a slit, allowing your hands to go into your trouser pockets. The slit must not be torn and the waterproof jacket used must be long enough to cover the whole length of pocket slit plus about 3-5cms (2 inches).
Gaiters In good condition and waterproof.
Warm Hat Must cover top of head and ears, not wool
Sun Hat/Cap With peak.
Walking boots Must be in good condition, provide ankle support and have Vibram type sole
Gloves Must not be fingerless or wool - recommended waterproof.
Sleeping bag
(wrapped in waterproof bag)
The minimum standard now acceptable is now a lower limit rating of 0 degrees. More details
Full body length roll mat E.g. Karrimat or Thermarest. Must be wrapped in plastic bag
Water bottle
(minimum 2 litre)
Platypus water systems will only be allowed provided that a full water bottle is also carried. This must be 1 litre min, have a screw top and can either be metal or plastic but NOT a thin plastic like a bottle of water or lemonade
Whistle (on lanyard) Metal whistles not recommended.
Water sterilisation tablets Enough for weekend – must be in date. Should be carried in a side or top pocket of the rucksack so they are easily accessible. No iodine.
Survival bag Body length, heavy duty plastic and in good condition (silver foil type are not acceptable)
Watch
Head Torch + spare batteries Must be 3.5 cms in diameter (Non LED only) OR minimum of 2 LEDs (1 LED is acceptable if the LED is over 1 watt.). A head torch is recommended as this is useful when putting up tents.
Mug, eating container and utensil Eating container should be plastic/metal bowl/plate. Utensil should be fork/spoon/spork.
Spare boot laces Must be long enough for your boots
Plastic bag No holes - to wrap a wet tent inner or outer
Toilet paper You don't need to bring an entire roll! Must be kept in a plastic bag
Pocket knife/tool
Personal first aid kit + personal medication Blister pack, plasters, antiseptic wipes/hand-wash, pain relief if desired, insect repellent, sun cream (small amount) and personal medication.

Spare set of clothes

(to pack in your rucksack and be carried all weekend)
Underwear We suggest boys wear briefs not boxers as these can lead to chaffing
Base layer A cotton T-shirt is acceptable but it should ideally be a lightweight, non-cotton, wicking layer
Mid layer Thick rugby shirt, sweat shirt or micro-fleece (not a t-shirt) – must have long sleeves
Fleece Min 200 grams, must have full length zip. If a spare fleece is not possible then 2 sweatshirts OR one sweatshirt and a microfleece can be used instead
Walking trousers Robust and windproof – no tracksters or jogging bottoms
Walking socks Thick, preferably looped weave to cushion the foot
Note: Either each item in a separate plastic bag OR 2/3 items at most in a sufficiently large separate plastic bag that enables the top of the bag to then be rolled over. Supermarket plastic bags will not be allowed - they must be strong (e.g. mail order packaging provided NO perforations).

Set of clothes to wear

Base layer A cotton T-shirt is acceptable but it should ideally be a lightweight, non-cotton, wicking layer
Mid layer shirt Thick rugby shirt, sweat shirt or micro-fleece (not a t-shirt) – >must have long sleeves
Fleece Must be 200 grams or above, not micro fleece
Walking trousers Robust and windproof – no tracksters or jogging bottoms
Walking Socks Thick, preferably looped weave to cushion the foot

Food

Note: Each meal to be separately packed in see through freezer bag with contents labelled and sealed with a bit of tape (in the same way that survival rations are to be packaged). This does not apply to snacks and nibbles.
Hot meal and drink for Saturday night Must be a substantial meal (i.e. Wayfarer). Pot-Noodles are not allowed
Hot breakfast and drink for Sunday + extra hot breakfast and drink for Saturday morning when we travel on Friday night
Lunch x2 Saturday and Sunday lunch + nibbles whilst walking. Each meal to be separately packed in see through freezer bag with contents labelled.
Emergency / Survival rations You need high energy foods such as Mars bars (x4), Kendal mint cake, Dextrasol etc plus an instant hot drink (e.g. cup a soup or drinking chocolate). All items to be placed in a clear plastic bag, sealed with tape and labelled.

Team kit

Pencils and Note book In plastic bag.
Stove, fuel, cooking pot and matches One set between two - borrow from your scout group where possible.
