Weekend Kit List

General Kit

Rucksack and waterproof liner Ideally about 65 litres - When packed should weigh no more than 1/3 of body weight or 30lbs. Allow room for team kit.
Sleeping bag To be packed in a separate waterproof bag. The minimum acceptable standard is to be marked with 'comfort down to zero degrees C'
Roll mat Must be thermal, insulated and full body length, wrapped in waterproof bag (Thermarests are fine)
Survival bag Body length, heavy duty plastic, must not be damaged or split. Silver foil type not acceptable
Waterproof jacket and trousers Must be robust - able to withstand substantial, prolonged wet weather over 36 hrs. The jacket must have a hood.
Whistle - on a lanyard Metal whistles not recommended. KNOW THE DISTRESS SIGNAL Must be easily accessible - attached to the outside of rucksack
Watch
Head torch + spare battery LED recommended
Notebook & pencil
Personal first aid kit Antiseptic wipes/hand-wash, blister pack, insect repellent, sun cream, pain relief tablets, toilet paper, spare boot laces AND PERSONAL MEDICATION
Gloves Ideally waterproof, not fingerless or wool
Headgear - 2 types Cold weather - warm hat covering top of head and ears.
Warm weather - sun hat with brim.
Pocket knife/tool A 3" (7.5cm) or less, foldable pocket knife, to be used only for Ten Tors to be carried inside rucksack pocket, not on display
Large plastic bag No holes, in which to place your share of wet tent

Clothes (to wear)

Base layer Lightweight wicking (thermal) layer
Middle layer Substantial, long sleeved - sweatshirt, microfleece or thick rugby shirt
Trousers Robust and windproof. No tracksters, jeans or jogging bottoms
Gaiters Waterproof and in good condition - to provide additional weather protection
Walking socks Thick, preferably looped weave
Walking boots Must be in good condition, provide full ankle support and have Vibram type sole (soles must not flex)

Clothes (spare, to be carried in rucksack in waterproof bag)

Underwear To avoid chaffing, we suggest that the boys wear briefs not boxers

Outer warm fleece jacket Warm fleece jacket, not thin micro fleece

Food & Water - more advice on the food and drink page

Breakfast x1 (x2 if we depart on a Friday) Hot breakfast and hot drink, must be substantial E.G. wayfarer.
Lunch x 2 Saturday and Sunday, packed separately. No meat or cheese in Sunday's lunch. Should include nibbles/snacks to eat whilst walking.
Evening meal x 1 For Saturday, must be hot and substantial with a hot drink (no Pot Noodles!)
Emergency rations High energy foodstuffs and a hot drink sachet. E.G. Mars bars x 4, Kendal mint cake etc and instant soup, hot chocolate sachet. All must be sealed in a clear plastic bag and labelled
Water bottles, 2 litre capacity Must not be flimsy plastic, must have a screw top lid. A platypus may be used provided that a 1 litre bottle is also carried to manage water sterilisation
Water sterilisation tablets Must be in date, enough for 48 hours
Mug, eating container and utensils Plastic or metal can be used, just a spoon or 'spork' will do as a utensil
Stove, fuel, matches and cooking pots One set between 2, share with a friend. If using gas, container must be full plus a new spare container to be carried. Can be borrowed from your Scout group

End of hike kit (stuff to be left in the van and not carried)

Small rucksack/Hold-all Should be labelled with your name on the outside so we can make sure it's available when you get back
Change of clothes A complete change of warm clothing, including a jacket, underwear and socks
Footwear Trainers or shoes
Plastic bag For your walking boots
Towel To dry yourself and deodorant
Snacks and drink

The following will be supplied by us, you need space in your rucksack to carry your share:
