Ten Tors and the Explorer Scout Awards

You can use your participation in Ten Tors training to help you in the following awards:

Chief Scouts Platinum Award


  • Complete a 2 day, 1 night expedition*
  • Contribution to 6 nights away, 4 spent camping as an Explorer Scout

Chief Scouts Diamond Award


  • Contribution to 12 nights spent away, 8 spent camping as an Explorer Scout

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award


  • Expedition training*

* although the distances for Ten Tors are greater than DofE, to qualify you must help in route planning and preparation. Let us know early on if you wish to use Ten Tors training for any of the asterisked awards.

Environment Activities List


Evaluate the impact of Ten Tors on the ecology of Dartmoor (can include the trade off of the economic importance to the local community).

  • Creative Badge – photography, drawings or writing
  • Emergency Badge – St John’s Ambulance Young Lifesaver Plus Award
  • Mountain Activities – Alternative A – Hillwalking, Alternative C – Navigation
  • Science & Technology Alternative A – Meteorology, Alternative F – Naturalist
  • Scouting Skills – contribution to 20 nights camping
  • Staged Activity Award – Nights away - stage 1 (1 night) through to stage 5 (100 nights)
