Features of the Ten Tors Army Map (Dartmoor)
Essentially this is a standard OS 1:50000 map superimposed with features useful for the event and training.
The features which are of importance are:
- Purple line with outer purple shading. This marks the “out of bounds” areas. The area you should walk within lies inside the purple line – cross over the purple line and into or beyond the purple shaded area and you are into “out of bounds” areas.
- At some points you are allowed to walk through “out of bounds” areas by way of “permitted paths”. These are a series of large black dots. The main areas affected are:
- around Fernworthy Forest (on the way to/from Shilstone to Sittaford)
- to/from Sittaford to Combestone (45/55) by Postbridge
- to/from Beardown to Two Bridges via Beardown Farm - The only other time you should go out of bounds is because of safety where the water level is too high and you know you can safely cross by a bridge e.g. Amicombe Brook head west downstream and use footbridge between Standon Farm and Willsworthy.
- Purple hashed areas – no camping (45/55)
- Block brown areas – bird nesting areas which are also out of bounds.
- Continuous red lines – marking the edge of the firing ranges. On the ground these are a series of red and white poles. Very useful as they often lead from one tor to another as you may find on your route
e.g. Steeperton to Watern. Do make sure that you are following the set of poles you require and check with your compass that they are leading you in the direction you wish to travel.
The above information is correct as at the latest reprint of the map 1998. Since then an additional bird nesting exclusion area has been added around Amicombe Brook which is not printed on the map but is notified as a separate sheet of instructions.
