Ten Tors news April 2010
The last training hike started with the usual scrutineering session at the hut. This went pretty well as everyone now knows what is required and if they don’t – it’s too late! We then got in the minibuses and drove to Meldon Hall, stopping for some chips on the way. After a bit of route planning everyone went to bed for a good nights sleep (well it would have been if it wasn’t for the people snoring or being sick!)
Saturday morning all the groups left on their route. Most groups were being supervised which means there are no adult leaders with them to help if they got lost. All the teams managed fine as by the time we got to Chat Tor to check on the teams they had all gone past! So we quickly went to Lynch Tor where we managed to see most of the teams. All were doing well in the glorious sunshine.
All the teams completed the full route and made it to the camp site quite early, which meant they had a bit of time to relax while cooking tea.
We all had a good nights sleep on Saturday night, despite it being very cold and we all woke up to a frost on the ground (and inside some people’s tents!). It didn’t stay cold for too long and the sun came out and it turned into another brilliant day. The teams all set off in good spirits and while they were hiking, Steve Smith (Cabot DC) was on BBC Radio Bristol (download .MP3) from the café.
We walked up Sittaford Tor to meet the teams as they went past and watched them hike along to the next tor.
Some of the teams got back early and could enjoy the sunshine while wait for the others. However, some people (that had just come back from Morocco on a school trip) were felling ill and being sick, so it wasn’t the nicest place to be!
Cheers, Paul
