TT news - January 2011
Well it was good to see a lot of keen walkers at the scrutineering before we left for the days hiking, lots of new kit, new bags & gaiters here and there and then some new boots as well as a few jackets. It seems several parents may have been a bit more out of pocket this Christmas than they were last year!
The days walking sounded like fun for some of you with one team almost ran the whole time but it’s important to remember that this is not a race, the steady eddy approach is better then the speeding greyhound as it is a walk/hike over 2 days. Some teams said the day was easy, some teams said it was hard and almost everyone agreed the route up from the school campsite was horrible and steep.
There were no injuries of any kind and this is a good thing. I saw plenty of folk checking their feet at the end of the hike as they changed into their casual shoes. This is a good habit to get into as you should always keep an eye on the condition of your feet. If you don’t look after them you can’t walk very far.
The general demeanour of all the teams was good with everyone working well together. It always helps if you can get on and support each other and this keeps the overall morale of the team high and helps to keep everyone going.
The only down side of the day was the loss of a compass. This was disappointing as we run on very limited funds and we have to take good care of our equipment as we don’t have enough money to replace items. If we have to spend money on replacing lost equipment then we have little choice but to charge you for the replacement. So please remember to take good care of the equipment you and your team are responsible for. During the actual event if you loose a piece of equipment and the army spot check you between check points or at a check point there is a real chance that your whole team could be disqualified on the spot if any bit of kit is missing!
I hope everyone enjoyed the first day hike of the New Year and we have plenty more hikes to do before the main event. Lets hope the weather stays as good as it was for this one.
