TT news - March 2011
It doesn't get much better than the walking conditions we had last weekend, there was a bit of a wind and the usual Dartmoor bog but otherwise the sun was shining for most the weekend and much of your routes was on footpaths.
It's going to get harder, not only is the weather likely to challenge you at some point but you are going to have to cope with longer distances and more challenging routes. To top it all off you are going to have to do it with less adult support as we'll be backing off as we get closer to the event.
The reason I say this is not to scare you or try to put you off but to make sure you know what's coming; it's important that YOU resolve any issues you had last time before the next hike otherwise you'll just face them again but they'll be even worse. So.
- Did you get blisters? If so read our guide on dealing with blisters and avoiding them.
- Did your rucksack hurt? Try adjusting it, re-packing it or if that fails change it.
- Did you run out of food or water? Pretty obvious how to fix this!
- Did you drop out? This happens for a variety of reasons so look at what caused you to drop out, if you need advice please contact us.
- Anything else? If you need advice or support please ask us before the next hike.
It's now only days until the event and only two weekend training hikes remain, you've all come a long way but still have quite a bit to learn. The Dartmoor hikes are a great opportunity to get familiar with the moor. If you know which boggy areas to avoid and can recognise tors without looking at the map that will help you to complete your assigned route that bit quicker.
With the event on the horizon it's worth reading these two accounts from Scouts who's footsteps you are now following in. They provide a great insight to the event and the team spirit which develops.
