April 2008 TTN 07

What a torrid year we have had – yet another wet weekend with poor visibility and incessant rain on the Saturday. Walking in the mist instils good navigational practise but ideally we would have liked you to have seen the landscape of the north moor so that you can put the tors, streams, forest, and other features into perspective before masking you with a blindfold.

Lots of determination by those of you able to walk on the Sunday so a big well done to all. What a big morale booster when the sun finally shone through from midday to mid afternoon. A couple of injury issues to be sorted out as well as ill fitting clothes or boots which caused rubbing.

Getting started on the Sunday was a bit slow, its interesting how the 45s were the last to go to sleep on Saturday night and also the last to wake up Sunday morning, however they were still the first out the campsite! Keep focussed team and double check your map and compass rather than following your nose.

There are still navigational issues for a lot of you so this Sunday we will concentrate this skill rather than distance. Day bags only, meet at the Gasworks not the hut at 7.30am . Phone Mike before Wednesday to confirm whether you are attending or cannot make it.  Before then you might like to look at a few websites to remind you of the principles of navigation:

  • From our website go to the Ordnance Survey link- Education-Map reading made easy. Also on the same website Mapzone – Homework help-mapability –compass and directions.
  • www.countrywalkers.co.uk/mapandcompass  (Also look at the 2 links at the foot of the page – Contour Map and Grid References
  • www.livefortheoutdoors.com enter “Compass work” in search, scroll down to the question “Give me an overview of everything I need to know about navigation”. A short 3 section answer is given : Features, Naismiths Rule and taking a bearing.

Lost kit. Quite a few items which are listed below. Also missing a First Aid kit from 45s and tent pegs. If you discover team kit phone Mike to let him know you have it.

Two birthdays celebrated – Elizabeth who turned 14 and Nigel whose age is a well guarded secret.

The event is now less than 3 weeks away and you have accomplished so much during training – just the final push to the starting line.
