Ten Tors News (02) December 3rd 2006

Well this is my first time in writing one of these news articles. I missed the first hike and after turning up at the gasworks at 7.20 on a Sunday it was not my favourite part but it seemed not to be raining at least.

It was good to see so many new faces and young walkers and of course, the veterans.

At the start of scrutineering it became apparent that there were a few walkers without the required kit including boots. The lists provided by the Ten Tors website are not there for a fun of it. It is there to help you and ensure that you bring the correct kit. Why not use them as a tick list and print them off!

The day went very well with a well planned route there was one minor altercation with regards to the second checkpoint for route A. The car park and the grid reference did not match but the teams took the best decision at the time. Well done to you all for that. The weather was kind to us even if a little windy on the tops. Lessons learnt: it may not be ideal to stop on the tops, the views were fantastic though.

The 45 er’s and 55 er’s all had a good day also and bumped into Simon and Ian a few times. Don’t forget Big Brother is watching you!!!! They know everything.

Just one note to add and that was the run-in with the farmer. I am not sure who this relates too but try to stick to known paths or routes which do not cross walls or fences where there is not a style.

They are maintained by farmers and cost them money. They do not take kindly to walkers climbing them and pulling them down. Adults also take note and try to be diligent if this happens.

A well done for all walkers who completed the route in good time hope to see you all next time!!!!

Lost property - pair black wollen gloves (large); together one inner and one outer sock (grey marl) inner sock branded Snow and Rock; A3 map of mendips area in plastic wallett -possibly belongs to a leader!

Rubbish left in the vans - please take your rubbish home with you and not simply drop onto the floor of the vans.

Plastic bag for boots at end of hike - your responsibility to provide - its on your kit list

Choice of equipment - please do check with the kit list and also ask us for advice. We do not want you to buy kit that the Army (and hence ourselves) will simply not accept. Fleece - should be 200gram, waterproof coat must have permanently attached hood (not a detachable hood), boots must have Vibram sole (or equivalent) and must support the ankle. (Only a very few fabric boots will be suitable for Dartmoor - possibly KSB 300 - otherwise they should be leather).

Have a good Christmas and see you in January for a crisp new year's day hike. Dont forget you will need to bring complete weekend kit (excluding two sets of meals). If you dont have a cooker, stove or anything else on the kit list simulate the additional weight by putting a housebrick in your bag. Keep fit.
