December 2007 TTN 02

This is now the second Ten Tors news of the 2008 season and things could not be different from the first hike. There was a good turn out from all teams and adults.

From the start the weather put everyone on a back foot. Continuous dull light and almost non-stop rain hampered the days walking. Some of the footpaths were very slippery but lessons should be learnt.

Firstly Navigation - Footpaths are not always easy to find along the route. Use other features such as buildings/woods/gradients and most obviously roads. These will help you decide which is the correct path.

Another method is take a bearing of the path and follow this as close as possible especially if you cannot see the next style. Use the map to its full potential and get used to using timings i.e approx 4 km an hour. This means if your next checkpoint is 4km away then this should take you no more than approx one hour. If you have been walking for an hour and a half then you would surely have missed your checkpoint!

During the day it was apparent that teams were unsure and doubting themselves. The simple answer to this is to have someone backing and double checking the navigation.

Secondly Weather/Kit – The weather was wet and windy. It is easy to become wet and hypothermic. This can be dangerous and if not dealt with can be serious. One way to prepare yourself would be to ensure your jackets are zipped up to the top and over trousers are worn. Simple I know but this will help you keep dry and warm. Use the kit you have it. In this wet weather it was easy to see why you need a rucksack liner. Rucksacks are not waterproof and a bag inside your rucksack will protect all your dry clothes and food. Water is also very important. Even in cold wet weather you need to drink fluids and at least 1 litre is needed preferably more.

On a personal note you must declare any medical conditions to Martin even if they occur after filling out your medical form or even if you feel they are insignificant as they may become more pronounced out on a walk.

On a lighter note the hike was cut short for some but generally all walkers are getting the feel of the length of walk that is needed. It is important to be able to complete the full hike.

WELL DONE and have a great Christmas. See you all in 2008!!!!!
